Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatments: Know Your Options When Your Cancer Comes Back
A
detailed, up-to-the-minute advanced prostate cancer treatment guide
from Johns Hopkins' specialists
From the desk
of Dr. Jacek L. Mostwin M.D., D. Phil. (Oxon) Medical Editor, The Johns Hopkins Prostate
Bulletin
Dear Friend:
You are NOT alone.
The American Cancer Society estimates
that over 186,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the
United States in 2008. For many, their prostate cancer will spread
beyond the prostate gland, even after apparently successful treatment.
Each year, more than 30,000 men die from
the disease. Their prostate cancer was detected too late. Or, it was
treated too late, after tumor cells had already left the prostate gland
and spread to other parts of the body (metastasized).
When prostate cancer recurs, there is
currently NO cure possible.
But there ARE ways to help control the
spread of the cancer, and manage your prostate cancer symptoms without
diminishing your quality of life.
In this new in-depth Special Report, Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments, Johns Hopkins' specialists review all
of the therapies currently being used to stop the advance of prostate
cancer, and give you the latest news on the most promising new treatments.
In your instant PDF download of Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments, you will learn about the current
therapies being used to try to halt the progression and spread of
prostate cancer, including:
- hormonal therapy
- chemotherapy for advanced
prostate cancer
- radiation therapy following
prostate cancer surgery
You will also discover the more
experimental ones which show the most
promise, including:
- gene therapy to stop the advance
of prostate cancer
- monoclonal antibodies
- angiogenesis inhibitors
...and
more.
My fellow prostate cancer specialists and
I have
produced Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatments to
present you with the latest cutting-edge information available
on recurring and advanced prostate cancer treatment options. This is
information so current, we are making it available to you as an INSTANT
PDF DOWNLOAD you can access right now in your quest for the best
treatment for your advanced prostate cancer, for the low price of only $49.95 (US) [$49.95 (CAN)].
In the first chapter When Prostate
Cancer Occurs,
Dr. H. Ballentine Carter gives you an overview of how prostate cancer
recurrence is defined.
You will also get a list of the three
criteria for seeking
further prostate cancer treatment immediately
if your prostate cancer returns.
New treatments for advanced prostate
cancer are emerging all the time, and can often offer hope of a longer
life and better quality of life. Depending on your prognosis and
symptoms, you might be considering joining a clinical trial right now.
In the section Should You Join a
Clinical Trial, you will learn:
- The Structure of Clinical Trials
- Safety Considerations
- The Pros and Cons of Joining a
Clinical Trial
- The Role of Use of Placebos in a
Clinical Trial
You will also get critical information to
help you make this critical health decision:

Your prostate cancer coming back after
your initial treatment is
obviously worrying, but the
specialists at Johns Hopkins, America's #1 Urology Center and
Medical Center for the past 18 consecutive years, have put together
this special report to help guide you through this new phase of your prostate
cancer.
In most cases, you do have time to learn
all you
can
about your prostate cancer treatment and options, to make the best
treatment choice possible for YOU personally.

We at Johns Hopkins know only too well
the emotional
as well as physical aspects the words "prostate cancer" entail.
Your rising PSA level is cause for
concern, but does not necessarily mean you have to act aggressively at
once. In Advanced Prostate Cancer
Treatments, Dr. Patrick Walsh gives you a list of
the
three different criteria in which you need to do something immediately to treat your advanced
prostate cancer.
If you do not meet these criteria, the
good news is that you have time to study all your options carefully. Advanced Prostate Cancer
Treatments was put together with YOU in mind,
to help you sift through each of your choices.
Often it is not a case of which treatment with advanced prostate cancer. In many instances it is a sequence, Treatment 1, then
Treatment 2, Treatment 3....
Plus there are promising new treatments just
on the
horizon, or newly available which you might not yet be aware of.
(And which we have updated prostate cancer readers about regularly for
over a decade in the quarterly Johns
Hopkins Prostate Bulletin).
You need to know about the
benefits of
each treatment, side effects and what you can do about them, how they
will affect
your overall lifestyle and health, and why there is as yet no cure for
prostate cancer.
In this 113-page treatment
options guide, my colleagues and I make available to you our extensive
knowledge, expertise
and clinical experience in treating the different stages of prostate
cancer
successfully.
All this information is available to you
right now as an instant download, so
you can be sure you are basing your decisions on up-to-the minute data
(as compared with a book published years ago, or one that takes weeks
to come off press at the printer, and arrive in the mail).
Advanced Prostate Cancer
Treatments
begins by helping you understand the current array of treatment
options.
- What are my options?
- What are the side
effects of each?
- How effective is the
treatment at halting the spread of prostate cancer?
- Is a combination of
treatments right for me?
We explain all this and more, in order
to guide you through all the options currently available if your
prostate cancer has returned after your initial choice of
treatment.
But isn't
time of
the essence in treating advanced
prostate cancer?
Only to a certain extent.
Fortunately, for most
men prostate cancer is a very slow-growing
disease, and only in certain instances do we recommend taking
aggressive action immediately.
You owe it to yourself to get the FACTS, in
order to
weigh all your choices carefully, to avoid making any irrevocable
decisions you might regret later. And to see if the benefits outweigh
the risks, or the impact on your quality of life.
The information presented in Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments will provide you with a
comprehensive guide to the many crucial issues to consider in treating
your advanced prostate
cancer, and
the facts you need to know before taking ANY action.
Your current treatment options include:
- close monitoring of your advanced prostate cancer
- hormone treatment
- radiation therapy
(EBRT)
- chemotherapy
- a combination of one
or more of these therapies
- new
therapies currently in development in a clinical trial
It's a daunting list. What do they all
mean? How can
you possibly choose which therapy, or combination of therapies, will be
right for YOU?
Advanced Prostate Cancer
Treatments guides through the decision-making process, drawing
on
the considerable expertise of leading Hopkins' specialists in a variety of fields related to treating advanced prostate cancer.
You'll
be able to make informed choices from a place of knowledge rather than
fear. And you'll be armed with the information you need to evaluate the
impact of each treatment on your daily life and long-term health and
quality of life.
We know exactly what you're
thinking as you sift through
each option:
What are the side effects of
the treatment?
What about the long-term
risks?
The psychological
implications
of treatment?
Based on all my test scores,
what is my realistic
prognosis?
Ultimately, your decision about
prostate
cancer treatment
has to be guided by the clinical stage of your cancer, the extent of
the
disease, and your age and overall health. You'll learn the answers to
your key questions such as:
- What is the definition of
advanced prostate cancer?
- Why is repeated PSA testing so
crucial?
- What are the best options
currently available for treatment of advanced
prostate cancer?
- What if I have bone metastasis?
- When should I consider hormone
therapy to treat my recurrent prostate
cancer?
- What are the side effects of
hormone therapy?
- What studies are available on
the success of hormone therapy?
- What about radiation therapy
to
treat my prostate cancer?
- When should I consider
chemotherapy?
- What other new therapies are
available if my prostate cancer has advanced?
- What new chemotherapy drugs
are
now available to help treat
prostate cancer?
- What are the latest findings
on
the drug Taxotere for my prostate
cancer?
- What other studies are
currently
being pursued at Johns Hopkins
on chemotherapy?
- Where can I go for more help,
support and information as
I sift through my prostate cancer treatment options?
| |
|
In Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments,
you'll also learn why there is no definitive consensus amongst doctors
about the best treatment for your advanced prostate cancer--or even
whether ANY
type of
treatment is necessary.
That's rightmany men are now opting
for close monitoring by their medical team, in order to try to maintain
a high
quality of life
without side effects for as long as possible.
Dr. H.
Ballentine Carter,
Professor of Urology and Oncology at Johns Hopkins Medical School and a
practicing surgeon, and Dr. Patrick Walsh, author of Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving
Prostate Cancer, take you through the pros and cons of close monitoring of your recurring prostate cancer,
and answers your most pressing questions, such as:
- What will a close monitoring program entail?
- How do my PSA levels help
determine if I am a good
candidate for close monitoring?
- What are my other options?
- How are clinical trials
conducted?
- What are the benefits of
joining
a clinical trial?
- What questions should I ask
before enrolling in a clinical trial?
- How can I find a clinical trial?
...and
more.
In the second section of Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments I draw upon my considerable
expertise as a professor of urology
at Johns Hopkins, head of the Division of Reconstructive and
Neurological
Urology, and Medical Editor of The Johns
Hopkins Prostate Bulletin, to answer
your many questions about hormonal therapy and advanced prostate
cancer,
including:
- The different types of
hormonal
treatment:
- Orchiectomy
- LHRH agonists
- Female hormones such as DES
- Antiandrogens
- How does hormonal therapy work?
- Why is hormonal therapy NOT a cure for prostate cancer?
- When should hormonal therapy be started?
- What are the side effects of hormonal therapy?
- What can be done about
worsening
anemia?
- What is
intermittent hormonal therapy?
- What are the benefits?
- What are my other options when my
hormonal therapy starts to fail?
All this and more is covered in Advanced
Prostate Cancer Treatments, available now as a
DIGITAL DOWNLOAD for the low price of only $49.95 (US), so you can
start applying what your learn right

What are your other options if you
discover you're not a candidate
for close monitoring for your prostate cancer?
What should you do if your prostate
cancer has advanced to such a degree that you need to do something
right away?
In addition to learning about
hormonal
therapy, you will also learn about the new chemotherapy drugs currently
being used to try to halt the spread of prostate cancer. Learn
about the seven main drugs, and how they work.
Get more in-depth information on Taxotere, its side
effects, how you know it is working for you, and the
results from the TAX327 study,
and how effective it is at treating
advanced prostate cancer.

chemotherapy agents on the horizon, and the role of clinial trials in
the prostate cancer drug development process.

Dr. H.
Ballentine Carter,

- The clinical definition of PSA failure after
radical
prostatectomy.
- Your options if you have a clinical relapse.
- What is salvage radiation therapy?
- The three potential scenarios in which radiotherapy
may
be beneficial.
- Why a selective approach to giving radiotherapy may
be
best.
- The four factors which are the best indicators of
success for radiation therapy due to their suggesting local-only
prostate cancer recurrence.
- Other key factors which help predict PSA remission.
- Guidelines for salvage radiation therapy to be
initiated.
In Treating
Prostate Cancer After Brachytherapy Failure, Theodore L. DeWeese, M.D.,
Professor of Radiation
Oncology
and Urology and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and
Molecular
Radiation Sciences at Johns Hopkins, and his esteemed colleague Danny
Song,
M.D., guide you through your questions as to how brachytherapy
(pronounced BRAKE-EE
therapy), is supposed to work, but why it is possible that it may have
failed, and what your options are if that proves to be the case.
When
should hormone therapy be initiated? Are you still a candidate for a
radical prostatectomy? What if the cancer has spread to the bone
(metastasized)? How can a TURP (transurethral
resection of the prostate) for BPH (enlarged prostate) can affect
the outcome of brachytherapy?

essential issue. As she states, "Controlling
pain and managing symptoms are the treatment goals for men with
advanced
prostate cancer. Studies over the years have reported that as many as
72% of
advanced prostate cancer patients are in pain, with one study reporting
that
47% of men with advanced cancer had pain that ranged from moderate to
very bad
even though they were being treated with pain medication.
"This should never be
the case. We now are able to successfully treat all types of pain
associated
with advanced prostate cancer."
Treating the Pain
of Advanced
Prostate Cancer offers 12
pages of:

Depression can
be
triggered by physical pain, and we should certainly never underestimate
the mental pain of a diagnosis that your prostate cancer has come back.
With the
support of family and friends, most men with prostate cancer will adapt
within
a few days or weeks to their fears about their future. However, some
men
sustain high levels of sadness, anxiety, and grief for weeks or months
once they receive the news that their prostate cancer has returned.
This is
beyond the normal adjustment period and typically means that the man
has become
clinically depressed. It must be noted that depression is NOT sadness;
it is a biological illness
with its own symptoms.
Its
now
believed that about one in four cancer patients develop depression at
some
point during their illness. Left untreated, depression can debilitate a
man,
diminishing his quality of life; it can even affect his follow-through
on
cancer treatment recommendations that may change the course of his
illness.
In the section Treating
Prostate Cancer and
Depression, Joanna L. Fine, who lectures nationally
about the emotional care
and treatment of prostate cancer patients, reviews
the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of depression in men
with
prostate cancer, and offers practical advice for getting the most out
of the
various effective depression treatments now available.
In The Anatomy of Hope,
Jerome
Groopman, M.D., offers his own experiences of debilitating pain for
nearly two decades, and how hope differs from optimism. He outlines how
hope can be an
essential part of treating advanced prostate cancer successfully.
As I
have said, the medical field has made significant progress in treating
advanced prostate cancer. Yet despite this, as of yet, we can offer hope for remission, but still no
cure.
In the last section, On
EndofLife Decisions,
award-winning journalist Virginia Morris takes us through her father's
eventual passing from prostate cancer, and offers invaluable guidelines
on how to deal with end of life decisions even as you deal with your
advanced prostate cancer treatment decisions, in order to be as
prepared as possible, and to ensure that all your personal as well as
medical wishes are carried out appropriately.
The concluding section, Grand Rounds,
covers many of the most common patient
questions on Prostate Cancer Recurrence after Radical Prostatectomy,
Brachytherapy, and External Beam Radiation Therapy, the very questions
most likely on your mind now, so you can be clear
about all of your options if your cancer has returned after your
initial
treatment.
