Helpful Hints on Using Advanced Search

The Johns Hopkins Health Alerts search engine uses most of the standard search techniques. Here are the most common ones you may want to use:

  • Search for exact phrases using quotation marks (" ")
Typing "prostate" or "cancer" will find items with those exact words in sequence.
  • Use the minus sign (-) to narrow your search
Entering prostate-cancer, tells the search engine to include the word prostate but not cancer. Don't forget - there's no space after the sign (e.g. -, -cancer).
  • Use a wildcard (*) for multiple endings
By typing an * (asterisk symbol) at the end of a word, you can search for items with multiple endings. For example: Prostate C* would return items such as Prostate Cancer, Prostate Conditions
