Johns Hopkins Health Alerts Prostate Disorders Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate that may cause pain in the lower back and in the area between the scrotum and rectum (the perineum). Prostatitis affects up to two million men in the US each year. Men can develop prostatitis at any age, particularly from their 30s onwards.

Prostatitis can severely affect one's quality of life. Up until recently, little has been know about this disease. In this section, we report on the latest breakthroughs on prostatitis, the four different kinds of prostatitis, and the treatments for each kind of prostatitis.

We also discuss prostatodynia, a condition that causes the same symptoms as prostatitis, but is not associated with infection or inflammation.
