Type 1 Diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that destroys the ability of beta cells in the pancreas to make insulin and occurs most commonly in children and young adults. Daily insulin injections are necessary to stay alive. Once called 'juvenile diabetes,' we now refer to it as Type 1 because of the increasing numbers of children developing Type 2 diabetes.
